Alexa Metallic

Research and Policy Coordinator

Alexa Metallic is a Mi'gmaq woman born and raised in her community of Listuguj First Nation located in Gespe'gewa'gi, Mi'gma'gi. She is currently based out of Kjipuktuk where she is finishing up the final year of the Master of Arts in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria. She is a 2022 SSHRC recipient for her research, titled Apigsigtuaqan, which works to re-matriate the narratives, stories, and worldview that have potentially been altered as a result of the translation and transliteration of the Mi’gmaq language into English. 

In 2019, Alexa graduated from St. Thomas University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Public Policy. During this time, she sat as the University’s Chair of Indigenous Reconciliation Committee, the Indigenous Student Representative, a Board Member for STU’s Senate on Reconciliation, and a contributor for the University’s newspaper.

Most of her time is currently spent doing research, for both her own academic pursuits as well as for the Rebuilding First Nations Governance Project (RFNG) in which she works on behalf of the Peace and Friendship Treaties Cluster. Alexa's hobbies include caring for her dog Winnie, beading, learning the language, and spending time with her family and friends.
