From Pledge to Action: Accountability in Philanthropy

This year’s conference will focus on funders’ accountability to movement leaders fighting for justice and their tangible commitment to system change. Critically examining the role of philanthropy in relation to supporting systemic alternatives has always been a key part of EDGE’s work. Too often, funders have demonstrated to be part of the problem rather than the solution, moving funds at their whim and creating challenging grantmaking conditions that hinder the work of movements.

The 2025 EDGE Conference in Bogotá will address this issue, emphasizing funders’ accountability and the need for consistent support. Highlighted during the 2023 conference, the lack of follow-up action on funders’ commitments and the trend of withdrawing support over political stands undermine systemic change efforts. The conference will explore how funders can genuinely support transformative justice, moving beyond empty pledges to foster real partnerships.
