Support Indigenous Sovereignty: From Indigenous Peoples Day to Anti-Canada Day

Happy Indigenous People's Day, relatives!

There is no question that Indigenous knowledge needs to be at the forefront of climate solutions. With this, we see the need to ensure responsive support to emergent needs for effective, community-led climate solutions.

As Indigenous Climate Action continues to grow as a movement-servicing organization, so do our responsibilities to Indigenous communities to uplift their experiences and wisdom—drawing on these relationships to guide our work. Through this work, we develop programming and resources that speak to the wants and needs of Indigenous communities in so-called Canada, empowering knowledge and awareness of climate change issues and the interconnection to Indigenous rights and sovereignty.

In recent years, in the era of “reconciliation”, funding support for Indigenous Peoples is rising. Yet, Indigenous solidarity is fundamentally removed from, and controlled by traditional colonial charitable models—allowing for the co-optation of funds to “Indigenous-serving” charities, rather than “Indigenous-led” movements.

This year, from Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) to Anti-Canada Day (July 1), we are rallying support from our allies to nurture Indigenous Sovereignty through donations to our Sovereignty In Action Awards!

Guided by our goals to provide resources, amplify voices, and uplift Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, the Sovereignty in Action Awards are an ICA initiative awarding micro grants to small, grassroots Indigenous-led groups and projects to help offset financial barriers, and honour the bravery of community members for their efforts and commitment.

Our hope is to raise a goal of $10,000 to continue growing the reach of our Solidarity in Action funds available to communities!  For every donation we receive from June 21-July 1, a donor will match it—meaning your gift will have double the impact!
