Standing with Our US Kin and Allies in the Fight for Climate Justice & Indigenous Rights

Like so many, we are devastated by the emboldened rise of the far right and re-election of Trump South of the Medicine Line. We have taken some time to digest this news and reflect on how we respond to such a grotesque display of neo-colonialism.

This re-election may feel like a setback in so many ways, making it challenging to remain optimistic. However, our commitment to stand with our Indigenous kin and allies across colonial borders remains unshaken; so does our trust in the power of community to overcome the worst.

We know this outcome has stirred deep concerns about the future of climate justice and Indigenous sovereignty—not only in the US, but across Turtle Island and the world over. US policy has far-reaching effects, touching communities here in so-called Canada, and we feel the toll these policies impose. We honor the courage of organizers, land defenders, water protectors, and ancestors across Turtle Island who inspire us with their resilience and strength.

This re-election is not just a US issue; it’s a call for all of us across Turtle Island to hold the line.

It has deep implications that extend far beyond its borders, affecting Indigenous communities and allies everywhere, especially in our shared lands across Turtle Island. In his previous term, US policies under Trump consistently prioritized fossil fuel expansion, rolled back environmental protections, and disregarded Indigenous consent. These policies, rooted in colonialism and extractivism, affect us all. Cross-border pipelines, mining, and resource extraction infringe on Indigenous lands, ecosystems, and ways of life—threatening everything we fight to protect.

This is not simply about environmental impacts; this is about preserving our rights, sovereignty, and ways of life. The decisions made in Washington affect all of Turtle Island, leaving lasting impacts to future generations, and the health of our lands and communities. We remain committed to standing alongside our US-based allies, recognizing that their victories and setbacks are shared across colonial borders.

Our organization is dedicated more than ever to supporting Indigenous rights and climate justice movements both within and beyond so-called Canada. We will continue to build alliances with Indigenous nations, climate justice groups, and allies across the border, honoring the resilience and determination of those fighting on the front lines.

Together, we form a network of resistance and hope, a force that will continue to grow, pushing for a world where Indigenous sovereignty and environmental justice are prioritized, upheld, and respected.

We ask all our supporters to remain vigilant, informed, and steadfast in solidarity with all those who continue to resist harmful policies in the US. We are stronger together, and we are committed to moving forward with strength and unity. Through shared struggle and community-based solidarity that is rooted in our love of our home, Mother Earth, we will continue to work toward a future where Indigenous sovereignty and climate justice are at the heart of all decisions that shape our world.

Let this radicalize you, don’t let this lead you to despair.

— With love from the ICA team
