Invest in Indigenous Sovereignty

Join Indigenous Climate Action & Sacred Earth Solar at New York Climate Week 2024 for a Panel Discussion!

On Tuesday, September 24, 2024 join us for a hybrid panel discussion: Invest in Indigenous Sovereignty with Indigenous leaders confronting colonial false solutions, & advocating for strong rights based divestment strategies to the climate crisis. Hear from Indigenous activists & land defenders, organizations, as well as staff at at Indigenous Climate Action & Sacred Earth Solar on how Indigenous knowledge, rights & ways of being can be utilized to strengthen climate solutions, & uplift Indigenous-led divestment in global climate action.

Indigenous peoples have been advancing some of the strongest climate policies rooted in our rights, language, culture and identities - deepening a collective appreciation for natural law and the importance of living natural systems as critical to survival on this planet. It’s time we examine how this can be applied to divestment and investment movements.

There are not enough Indigenous-led climate justice organizations North of the Medicine Line, and at ICA we have a responsibility to stay involved, informed and active in international spaces where global colonial leaders are negotiating plans and actions that directly impact Indigenous lives, our rights and our culture. Bottom line, no decisions about us without us.

There will be a Q&A period following this discussion, where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to the panelists. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and closed captions will be provided, and there will be a recording of this session on ICA’s YouTube channel in the days following this event.  More details to follow–stay tuned to your inbox for more information!

About the Hosts

Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) is the only Indigenous-led climate justice organization in so-called Canada. Guided by a diverse group of Indigenous knowledge keepers, water protectors and land defenders from communities and regions across the country, we believe that Indigenous Peoples’ rights and knowledge systems are critical to developing solutions to the climate crisis and achieving climate justice. We model our work and organizational structure on systems of free, prior and informed consent and self-determination. By providing communities with knowledge and resources, we can inspire a new generation of Indigenous climate leaders building solutions centered around our inherent rights and cultures.

Sacred Earth Solar (SES) is an Indigenous women-led, grassroots organization that brings climate solutions and healing initiatives directly to the frontlines of land protection, cultural resurgence, and language revitalization. We work in solidarity with Indigenous communities and organizations who are protecting their homelands, their culture and those who have been impacted the most by extractive industries, land dispossession, and climate change. We believe that the time has come to reintegrate the wisdom of our ancestors by implementing a Just Transition. We work towards a future where we are no longer reliant on fossil fuels, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and inspire the world to join us in our call to create a healthy planet that sustains all generations to come.
