The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 28th Conference Of the Parties (COP28) is well underway, and all eyes are on Dubai to see if world governments and policymakers will decisively deliver the action we so urgently need to fast track the real solutions necessary to get us to Real Zero. If you roam the conference center, you can’t help but pick up on hot topics like carbon markets, offsets, removals, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, Nature Based Solutions, geo-engineering—all of which are framed as the miracles that will save us all from the climate crisis. These schemes are being promoted widely by the COP presidency, world governments from the Global North, and polluting industries alike.
But do these schemes really hold the promise and potential we need in order to avoid? Or does evidence and experience demonstrate that they are actually part of an agenda that will enable further fossil fuel use in a world that must be phasing out, while harming communities and ecosystems all around the world?
