ICA celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day - Everyday!
June 21st is noted as an important day within the calendar of people who live in so-called Canada. Established in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) called for the establishment of “National Aboriginal Solidarity Day” as a day of recognition of Indigenous peoples, rights and cultures. Although Quebec recognized the day in 1990, it was not until 1996 when the day was formally recognized across the country.
At ICA we know everyday should be Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Our people, our communities, our culture, our ways of knowing and being, are a foundational part of these territories.
Members of our team got together for a facebook live stream event to share reflections and celebrations of what the days means for us, what makes us proud to be Indigenous, and what allyship means when it comes to being in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples.
ICA also shared a number of calls to action for non-Indigenous people to take on this day to show solidarity and join in the journey for decolonizaton. #ThisisICA #IndigenousClimateAction #LandBack #Decolonize
